A Range Rover fuse box guide is useful when a simple electrical failure needs separating from a far more expensive module fault. A dead 12V socket, inoperative tailgate, non-starting vehicle or a cluster of warning messages may be caused by a blown fuse. Equally, the fuse itself may only be the visible result of water ingress, wiring damage or failure inside the central junction box.
On modern Range Rover platforms, the fuse box is not always just a passive holder for fuses and relays. Depending on model and year, it may form part of the CJB, BCM or body electrical control system. That distinction matters. Replacing fuses is straightforward. Replacing the entire unit without identifying the cause can create coding, immobiliser and configuration problems that were not present at the start.
Start with the Correct Range Rover Fuse Box Guide
There is no single fuse layout for every Range Rover. Fuse positions, ratings and module names change across the L322, L405, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Velar and newer vehicles. Even within one model line, a facelift, engine option, market specification or optional equipment pack can alter the layout.
Use the fuse chart for the exact vehicle year and model, ideally confirmed by VIN. The owner’s handbook is a sensible starting point for routine consumer circuits, but workshop wiring information is more reliable when diagnosing a no-start, network fault or multiple electrical failures. Generic online diagrams are often copied between variants and can lead to the wrong fuse being tested or replaced.
Most Range Rovers have more than one fuse carrier. Common locations include the passenger compartment, luggage compartment and engine bay. On some models, additional high-current fuses sit close to the battery or beneath separate covers. Do not assume that a fault in the rear of the vehicle will always be protected by a rear fuse box. The controlling module may be elsewhere.
What a Blown Fuse Usually Tells You
A fuse protects a circuit by opening when current exceeds its designed limit. It does not normally fail without a reason. A one-off failure after connecting a faulty accessory is different from a fuse that blows repeatedly as soon as it is replaced.
If the replacement fuse fails immediately, stop fitting more fuses. The circuit may have a short to earth, damaged wiring, a seized motor, a failed component or internal damage in a module. Fitting a higher-rated fuse is never a repair. It removes the protection designed to prevent overheated wiring, damaged control units and, in the worst case, fire.
A fuse can also look intact while still causing trouble. Corrosion on the blades, heat damage at the holder, poor terminal tension or a cracked internal element can interrupt supply under load. This is why a visual check alone is not enough on an intermittent electrical fault.
Test Before You Replace
With the ignition off and the vehicle allowed to enter sleep mode, remove the relevant fuse using the correct puller. Compare its rating with the chart and inspect the element, but confirm it with a multimeter where possible. A continuity test checks whether the fuse is open; voltage testing at the fuse terminals can confirm whether the circuit has a supply when it should.
For a live voltage test, use care. A test lamp can be useful for loaded circuits, while a multimeter is better suited to low-current reference and signal circuits. Avoid probing randomly into module connectors or bridging fuse terminals. Modern Land Rover electrical systems are networked, and a poor test method can add faults to an already complicated job.
When the Fuse Box Is the Fault
Range Rover fuse carriers and body control units can suffer from issues beyond a blown fuse. Water ingress is a regular concern, particularly where drains, windscreen scuttle areas, tailgate seals or luggage-compartment seals have allowed moisture into the vehicle. Green corrosion, oxidised terminals and water marks are clear warning signs, but damage can also occur internally before it becomes obvious externally.
Heat is another clue. A browned fuse cavity, distorted plastic, loose terminal or burnt smell points to resistance at the connection. A fuse may remain within its correct rating while the terminal itself overheats. Replacing the fuse alone will not restore a damaged contact or internal circuit track.
Typical symptoms of a failing CJB, BCM or integrated fuse box include:
- Multiple unrelated electrical functions failing together
- Intermittent no-crank or no-start faults
- Central locking, windows, wipers or lights operating unpredictably
- Constant battery drain after the vehicle should be asleep
- Communication fault codes affecting several body systems
- A known-good fuse with no output from the protected circuit
CJB, BCM and Fuse Box: Why Names Matter
Technicians often use “fuse box” as a convenient description, but the part may be much more than a distribution point. A Central Junction Box can control outputs, monitor inputs and communicate with other modules. A Body Control Module may be integrated into the fuse carrier or linked closely to it. On newer Range Rovers, configuration data and security-related information can be part of the unit’s role.
That is why a donor fuse box is rarely a guaranteed plug-and-play solution. A used module may carry another vehicle’s configuration, fault history or immobiliser data. It may also be the wrong hardware or software revision despite looking identical. In some cases, fitting it can leave the vehicle with new faults, missing functions or a no-start condition.
Repair, cloning or virginising can be a better route where the original unit is recoverable and the correct service is available for that part number. The right approach depends on the fault, the module type and whether vehicle-specific data needs retaining. Safe Checks Before Removing a Fuse Box
If the fault has progressed beyond a fuse test, resist the temptation to pull the unit out immediately. Record all diagnostic trouble codes first, including historic and network faults. Photograph connector positions and fuse locations, then check for moisture and heat damage without disturbing more than necessary.
Before disconnecting a major body module, follow the correct shutdown procedure for the specific vehicle. Keep the key away from the vehicle, switch off consumers and allow the systems to sleep. Some Range Rover models require a battery support unit during diagnostic work, while others may need specific post-reconnection procedures for windows, steering angle sensors or other functions.
Do not use a battery charger as a substitute for diagnosis. Low voltage can create misleading faults, but charging alone does not explain why a particular fused circuit has no supply, why a module is awake, or why corrosion has developed in a connector.
Check the Cause, Not Just the Damage
Water-damaged modules should never be treated in isolation. Find and repair the entry point first. If a connector has burnt because of a high-resistance terminal, inspect the mating connector and the load on that circuit. If a fuse repeatedly blows, isolate downstream components and test the wiring before sending a replacement module into the same failed circuit.
This is where workshop process saves money. A correctly repaired or cloned unit can be wasted if it is fitted back into a vehicle with an active short circuit, poor earth or water leak. The module may be the victim rather than the original cause.
A Practical Fault-Finding Order
For most Range Rover electrical complaints, work from the simple checks towards the vehicle-specific electronics. Confirm the battery is healthy and properly charged, inspect the relevant fuse and relay, test for supply and earth at the affected component, then scan all modules with suitable diagnostic equipment. Look for patterns rather than chasing every code separately.
For example, a single failed heated seat may point towards a local fuse, seat module or wiring issue. Heated seats, central locking, interior lamps and tailgate functions failing together suggest a shared supply, junction box fault or communication issue. A no-start with immobiliser warnings demands even more care, because the affected modules may be security-linked.
Use the exact wiring diagram to establish what should be present at each point: permanent battery supply, ignition-switched supply, ground, LIN or CAN communication, and controlled output. That is more reliable than changing parts based on a forum symptom match.
A fuse is cheap, but the diagnosis behind it is where the real repair is made. Treat the fuse chart as the start of the job, protect the vehicle’s original configuration where possible, and investigate any repeated failure before replacing a costly Range Rover module.
