Just as often, it is being suggested before the actual fault has been found.
For Discovery 2 and Defender Td5 owners, the right outcome depends on the vehicle, its existing electronics, the condition of the engine ECU, and what has already been changed. What TD5 immobiliser removal actually changes
TD5 immobiliser removal is an ECU software modification that changes how the engine ECU responds to the vehicle's immobiliser authorisation. In a standard setup, the ECU expects the correct approval from the relevant security system before allowing the engine to run. If that approval is absent, corrupted, or mismatched, the result can be a crank-no-start condition.
The term is often used loosely. It does not mean every security-related component has been repaired, and it does not restore central locking, cure a weak key fob, or repair a failed alarm or body control module. It changes the engine ECU's dependence on that authorisation signal.
That distinction matters. A vehicle may have an immobiliser-related no-start fault while also suffering from a poor battery connection, water ingress, damaged wiring, failed ECU power supply, or an internal ECU fault. It is also worth checking the history. Has a replacement engine ECU been fitted? Has the vehicle been stood for months? Did the fault begin after a flat battery, water ingress, alarm problem, or attempted repair? These details often point towards the real failure more quickly than replacing components one by one.
For mail-in ECU work, the exact vehicle details matter: model, year, transmission, ECU part number, whether the unit is original or donor, and a clear description of the symptoms. This allows the service to be matched to the job rather than applying a generic modification to every Td5 ECU.
Faults that can resemble an immobiliser problem

It can also suit a rebuild, specialist project, or working vehicle where the owner understands the reduced theft protection and wants a reliable engine-management solution.
It may also be appropriate where an otherwise healthy ECU is being retained and the original immobiliser side of the system has become unreliable or uneconomic to repair. In these situations, the benefit is not merely getting the engine started once. It is removing a confirmed dependency that has repeatedly left the vehicle unusable.
The decision should be made by the legal owner or authorised repairer, with the vehicle's intended use and security requirements in mind. A professional specialist will require appropriate ownership information before carrying out security-related ECU work.
The trade-offs need to be clear
Removing an immobiliser function is not a free upgrade. The most obvious compromise is reduced theft deterrence. A Td5 may be used as a daily driver, stored on a driveway, parked at a railway station, or kept as a valuable classic. Those circumstances should influence the decision.
Insurance is another consideration. Any security modification should be disclosed to the insurer. The effect on cover, premium, and theft conditions varies between policies, so it should never be assumed that an undeclared modification is acceptable. Repair, clone, virginise or remove the immobiliser?
These services solve different problems, and choosing the wrong one is where unnecessary cost begins.
If the original ECU has an internal fault but the vehicle's existing configuration is otherwise correct, ECU repair may be the cleanest option. It retains the established vehicle setup and avoids introducing a donor unit unnecessarily.
If an original ECU is beyond repair, cloning can transfer the relevant data to a compatible donor ECU. Virginising is used in situations where a module needs to be prepared for proper commissioning to another vehicle. It is not simply another word for cloning, and it is not automatically the right answer for a Td5 no-start.
Immobiliser removal is a targeted option where the security authorisation itself is the confirmed obstacle, or where the owner has made an informed decision that the standard arrangement is no longer practical.
